Public libraries are vital to communities, providing free access to knowledge, technology, and educational resources for all ages. They foster digital equity by offering internet access and digital tools, crucial for those without home internet. Libraries also build community connections through events and classes that promote lifelong learning, job readiness, and personal growth. Beyond resources, they serve as safe spaces and provide essential social services, such as housing and mental health information.
Many public libraries rely on support from the community to help them sustain operations and serve the needs of community members. Volunteering at your local public library is a meaningful way to help sustain and enhance this vital community resource. Libraries often rely on volunteers to maintain operations, especially in areas facing budget constraints. By dedicating a few hours each month, you can contribute to library programming, support community outreach, and make the library a more welcoming place for all.
Here are some impactful ways to help:
1. Assist with Programs and Events:
Libraries frequently host events like storytime for children, literacy classes, and community workshops. Volunteers can help with setup, guide participants, and support program facilitators, making these events accessible and enjoyable.
2. Shelve and Organize Materials:
Libraries need assistance in keeping books and other materials in order. Volunteers play a crucial role in shelving and organizing, ensuring visitors can easily find what they’re looking for.
3. Promote Literacy Programs:
Volunteers can participate in reading and literacy programs, often working one-on-one with children, teens, or adults. This role supports lifelong learning, helping individuals build confidence and skills.
4. Assist with Technology:
Libraries provide computer and internet access to those who may not have it at home. Volunteers can help patrons navigate computers, use basic software, or access online resources, helping bridge the digital divide.
5. Support Fundraising Efforts:
Many libraries have foundations or “Friends of the Library” groups focused on fundraising. Volunteers can contribute to organizing events or drives that raise essential funds, directly impacting library sustainability and expansion.
FirstService Residential’s Kristina Quiros knows all too well the important role our public libraries play in our community. And she embraces our mission to #FirstServeOthers through her role in organizing the Friends of the Miami Dade Public Library’s 50th-anniversary fundraiser, a first-of-its-kind event scheduled for November 16, 2024, at the Coral Gables Library. The fundraiser, running from 7-10 pm, is particularly important as it aims to address pressing needs within the Miami Dade library system, which encompasses 50 branches, many of which require structural improvements and expanded program funding.
Through her work, Kristina aims to spotlight the library’s “unsung heroes” who contribute to valuable community services. These services range from digital lending and museum access to literacy programs, community computers, and specialized software resources. Furthermore, the library offers essential social services, providing support with affordable housing, mental health resources, food benefits, and more.
“Libraries are an essential part of the minds, heart and soul of our community. The modern-day library is so much more than books. The library fills the gaps in society ensuring that our community has access to essential services. It bridges the digital divide, ensuring access to laptops, tablets, mobile hotspots, and wi-fi to secure that kids can complete their homework or adults have the resources they need to work. They’re places where ideas are sparked, creativity flows, and people can connect. There are so many classes and events hosted by the library where you can learn new languages, gain new skills, practice hobbies, gather, and so much more,” said Kristina. “Our local libraries even have a few branches that have access to 3D printing, workshops that teach about building apps, robotics, gaming, recording podcasts, blogging, photography, digital design, producing film, mixing music, and more… teaching teens and adults to use technology to tell stories and engage with the world around them in powerful ways, building upon the role libraries play as places of innovation and exploration.”
We salute Kristina for her leadership and vision for this fundraiser, which underscores her dedication to the library’s mission and her determination to enrich Miami Dade’s community resources. Through her efforts, she and the organizing committee are paving the way for new support and recognition for the library’s invaluable role in the community.
