Celebrating Earth Day, Every Day

TLS Launches 5-Day Earth Month Challenge to Commemorate Earth Day

Earth Day is a global reminder of our responsibility to the planet. Since 1970, it has united people to raise awareness and drive action for environmental protection. The day highlights the urgency to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion through sustainable actions. Protecting the planet is essential for our health, communities, and future.

TLS 5-Day Earth Month Challenge

To highlight the importance of adopting a more sustainability-minded lifestyle, TLS offered a series of challenges to its team members. During its Five-Day Earth Month Challenge, team members were invited to participate in as many challenges as possible, and to share their experiences with the group. The goal is for participants to convert these activities into habits, making every day a celebration of Earth Day.

Here’s how the week looked, and how team members rose to the challenge.

Day 1: Trash Audit Tuesday

Challenge: Track everything you throw away for one day.

Goal: Increase awareness of waste habits and identify what could be reduced, reused, or recycled.

Bonus: Share one surprising thing you noticed.

Nicole S: April 15th- Here at home we do the Green Bins for compost with our waste food. We also reuse containers, bins.

Debbie V: I throw out very little because I eat whole foods. I use rotisserie chicken containers as mini greenhouses, and donate anything I don’t need anymore to the local dog rescue for their fundraising yard sales, including paintings that I do just for practice so the materials are not wasted.

Day 2: No-Drive Wednesday

Challenge: Skip the car today. Walk, bike, carpool, or use public transport.

Goal: Cut down on carbon emissions from solo driving.

Bonus: Post a picture of your car-free commute.

Ana B: This morning I walked to church instead of driving to support our No-Drive Wednesday and despite de cold, it was actually pretty nice. I could some birds and look at the trees… I highly recommend it. Take a walk outside. It’s good for the environment and your mental health!

Laura S: If I walk to Tim Horton’s before and after work every Wednesday I would save the emissions from 104 (or more) trips a year. And all of the idling in the drive-thru!

Becky S: For today instead of driving to the dog park me and the pups are walking around the neighbourhood

Day 3: Thrift or Swap Thursday

Challenge: Buy nothing new today. Thrift, swap, or get creative with what you already have.

Goal: Reduce consumer waste and fast fashion impact.Bonus: Show off your best thrift find or upcycled creation.

Ana B: Today I am wearing a skirt the belonged to my mother. She gave it to me many years ago when I was in university. Last year I had it restyled to fit in more with my current style. I have several items like this from mom and my grandma. I love wearing them and I love that they have a really special meaning.💗And top of that they are unique! 😎

Gabriella M: I plan on donating a bag of clothing, garments from my closet and my family’s, that are in good condition, but have not been worn in a while. I hope someone of need can make good use of them.

Day 4: Food Footprint Friday

Challenge: Eat a fully plant-based meal.

Goal: Learn how food choices affect the planet.

Bonus: Share a recipe or photo of your plant-based plate.

Denise K: My plant-based breakfast was oatmeal with Evans cherries, flax seed, cocoa, and cinnamon!

Ana B: I’m cooking a plant based meal for dinner today: spaghetti squash with creamy mushrooms!

Jonathan C: Cherry tomaters, peppers, cucumbers, green olives, feta cheese, and pasta glazed in greek salad dressing.

Day 5: Sustainability Shoutout Saturday

Challenge: Highlight a local business, product, or habit that supports sustainability.

Goal: Spread awareness and inspire others.

Bonus: Tag them and explain why you support them.

Nicole S.: I want to do a sustainability Shout out to our Green Bin Program- with their work it helps divert food waste and yard waste from landfills, making compost that can be used to enrich soil and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. !!!

Debbie V.: River Bell Market Garden is a sustainably run, organic farm in Dresden, about 20 minutes from me.

TLS’ Earth Month Challenge demonstrates how simple it can be to incorporate sustainability-focused actions into your daily life. Why not challenge yourself to select one of the actions and turn it into a habit? Share what you are doing with family and friends to inspire them to join you. Every action matters, so let’s all contribute our part.
