National Blood Donor Day: Celebrating Lifesaving Contributions

National Blood Donor Day, celebrated on June 14, is a day dedicated to highlighting the critical need for blood donations and honoring the incredible impact that donors have in saving lives. Blood donation is a vital part of healthcare, providing essential support for surgeries, cancer treatments, accident recovery, and chronic illnesses. Since blood cannot be manufactured, donations from healthy volunteers are the only source available to meet this ongoing demand.

Why Blood Donation is Important

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. Blood transfusions are one of the most common hospital procedures, with patients requiring a blood transfusion every two seconds. More than 42,000 units of red blood cells, platelets, and plasma are used by patients every day. These blood transfusions are needed to treat patients with acute care needs such as trauma and blood loss during childbirth, as well as for disease management for patients with a variety of health conditions, including cancer, inherited blood disorders, cardiovascular and orthopedic surgeries, and organ and bone marrow transplants.

In the United States, approximately 3% of the eligible population donates blood each year. Out of the blood donations in the U.S., 26.3% of all whole blood donations in the U.S. are contributed by first-time donors.

Canada is also in need of more blood donors to meet its demand. Canadian Blood Services reports needing more than 100,000 new donors each year to keep up with the demand. In fact, 52% of Canadians say they or a family member have needed blood or blood products at some point in their lives.

So, consider donating blood and help save lives!
